On The Other Side of the Job Search Table

I’ve been on somewhat of a strange journey since starting this new blog. I took a job making in the mid 60′s for a large company. The actual position didn’t bear much resemblance to what had been promised in the interview, however. I was so confident I could find a similarly compensated position, which was more along the lines of what I wanted, that I resigned to focus on a new job search – My, how times have changed!

Sure enough, within a month I had about five or six serious options and received two offers. One was for a managerial role paying $80k (after some negotiations) while the other matched the salary I had left after I resigned. I ultimately took the lower paying position because it allowed me to take a senior role in a small company, which if it is successful as I hope, could mean I may one day be able to actually retire my outstanding balance with Aunt Sallie.

(I know this sounds like bragging, but I want all dejected recent graduates to realize there’s a lot out there once you are able to escape the chains of the legal industry and the law school mindset. Trust me, I thought my career was toast as toiled my way through temp gigs after law school.)

  1. Wow, that's great that you're finding new opportunities! A friend of mine from law school recently took the plunge and left his in-house position to work for a software company. He got lucky - he got the first non-legal job he applied for. I guess maybe the job market is either getting better or employers are figuring out that since so many JD's are applying for non-legal positions, maybe they're not all looking to just park somewhere until that big position at a white shoe firm opens up. At any rate, good news. Thanks for the update.
