This person picked law because that person wanted to study law and have the skills to succeed in that profession. I told that person majority of the recent graduates whether in nursing, law, business, and other degrees have difficulty in getting employment. These times are very hard. Anyone who is considering of going to college should really research online and ask recent graduates about majors before choosing a major. Whatever you major in make sure you start doing internships after your first year and build your resume by joining student chapters, doing volunteer work, projects or activities, and all. Build your resume while you are in college and expect a roller coaster ride after graduation.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5618663158161665199.post-31159891432549755932011-09-29T09:22:07.204-04:002011-09-29T09:22:07.204-04:00I am 40 and I was getting pressure from the husban...I am 40 and I was getting pressure from the husband to use my brain and take the LSAT and try the lawyer path...and then I found all these law-school-is-a-scam blogs. I was told point blank by the scam bloggers that I will never be able to get a job in law because of my age (I don't mind the honesty at all). and that I'd be saddled with crushing debt I'd never be able to repay. I cancelled my LSAT (they still took my money; despite fighting them, I lost. What a racket!). And yet...I am still getting ten e-mails a day from shitty law schools that are begging me to apply, just dying to take my (loaned) money. Thanks for the public service. You have saved me years of frustation, and I never really wanted to be a lawyer anyway. I have taken the LSAT several times and have come close to biting the bullet, but all the issues you have raised ultimately scared me off. It is gratifying to find, a few years later, that my fears were not just paranoia and cynicism holding me back. Perhaps I can let go of the "if only I had gone to law school" nugget of regret that I've been nurturing.

Second, your complaints about law school apply equally to expensive private undergraduate colleges. Or, well, they do if you need to assume large student loans in order to attend that expensive prestigious college and you choose to major in the liberal arts. This is what happened to me. I can tell you that a Bachelor's degree in History from an Ivy League school in no way guarantees you a good job, or even any job, and if you have large student loans you will have to pay them off, whether you scored an entry-level position on Wall Street or you are steaming milk at Starbucks. My undergraduate student loans made my post-college debt-to-income/asset ratio unfavorable enough that I could not buy a car. It's kind of hard to get a job if you don't have transportation. Forget about buying a home. Getting married and choosing to be a stay-at-home mom.

So, undergraduate loans are problematic, too!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5618663158161665199.post-34196489763516512852010-09-14T23:57:46.599-04:002010-09-14T23:57:46.599-04:00Call Senators Durbin and Franken and your congress...Call Senators Durbin and Franken and your congressman to support the student loan discharge bill (S. 3219 or House version H.R. 5043)if you are unemployed, underemployed, have no hope of a legal career and are mired in debt and living a life of indentured servitude. Thanks for what you put up here over the past year +

Esq. Never was my "first" - while I was wandering my desert of Law School temptation, I happened across your blog. You didn't change my mind overnight, but you were an entree into the other side of law school grads, who seem to get shut out of the conversation all too often. I'm glad to see so much more of this out there, and while you might regret this post or that one, overall what you did here was a good thing. You (and Nando and Knut and half a dozen others) reach a lot of people, more than you can measure I suspect, and getting this message out is a valuable thing.

Some people will snipe, some will blow it off and say "waaa - just someone who didn't make it" - and that's just the way it is. But rational people approaching the decision to go to LS or not are reading these blogs, and are listening. Your experience isn't the be all, end all I'm sorry to tell you, but it's a real one and the readers here are better off for having had your perspective.

Good luck to you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5618663158161665199.post-70908900952689201822010-08-15T22:48:37.606-04:002010-08-15T22:48:37.606-04:00I'm not shutting down the blog.
