E-mail Scam Alert!

I just received the following e-mail scam. Fortunately, I'm too smart to ever fall for something like this, but I wanted to warn my readers about it.

FROM: GENERAL MOBUTU MOMODU
INTERIM GOVERNMENT
LAGOS, NIGERIA

TO: DISTINGUISHED AMERICAN SCHOLAR
[City Redacted], UNITED STATES

DEAR SIR/MADAM,

I HAVE BEEN REQUESTED BY THE NIGERIAN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, LAW, AND DOCUMENT REVIEW TO CONTACT YOU FOR ASSISTANCE IN RESOLVING A MATTER. THE DEPARTMENT HAS RECENTLY INVESTED IN A PRESTIGIOUS, TIER TWO LAW SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES. THIS IS ONLY THE 15TH SCHOOL OF ITS KIND IN THE PARTICULAR STATE IN WHICH IT IS LOCATED. DUE TO OUR BUSINESS MODEL, THE SCHOOL STILL REQUIRES ENROLLING ONE MORE STUDENT FITTING YOUR GPA/LSAT PROFILE BEFORE COMMENCING CLASSES.

YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE IS REQUESTED. WE KINDLY REQUEST THAT YOU ENROLL IN OUR AUGUST INSTITUTION OF HIGHER LEARNING BY SIGNING A PROMISSORY NOTE FOR (US $50,000) ONCE PER ANNUM FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. DEPENDING ON YOUR PERFORMANCE, YOU ARE GUARANTEED TO MAKE AS MUCH AS (US $160,000) PER ANNUM. THE AVERAGE RATE OF RETURN FOR OUR GRADUATING LEGAL SCHOLARS IS (US $100,000). I HAVE ALSO RECEIVED ASSURANCE FROM OUR DEAN THAT THE SCHOOL WILL EVENTUALLY QUALIFY FOR INCLUSION IN THE FIRST TIER, WHICH WILL ONLY ENHANCE YOUR RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT.

THANK YOU KINDLY FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, AND ALL RELEVANT FAMILY, PERSONAL, AND BUSINESS CONTACTS FOR US TO HAND OVER TO ONE OF OUR ESTEEMED STUDENT LOAN PARTNERS IN THE UNITED STATES. YOUR IMMEDIATE RESPONSE WILL ALLOW THEM TO ISSUE YOUR PROMISSORY NOTE IMMEDIATELY. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO PARTNERING WITH YOU IN THIS LUCRATIVE ACADEMIC ENDEAVOR.

YOURS TRULY,

GEN. MOBUTU MOMODU
CROWNED PRINCE OF THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA

  1. OMG!!! I am dying over here. I get 300 emails from scam artists Nigerians a day, but this truly takes the cake. And I think that some dumb pre-law somewhere would fall for it. This is insane. When will they stop!???

  2. Angel, I think this post was tongue-in-cheek. I do think it's pretty funny though.

  3. This is tongue in cheek. But it is not far off the mark - that is what makes it so damn funny. This is what the American law school industry does.

The schools entice young people to apply to law school in large numbers, by presenting this as a good investment in one's future. At least with the Nigerian scams, you KNOW the offer is horseshit.

  4. Haha, sorry, Angel - It's just a joke :) Even the Nigerian scammers are too honest to get into the law school business.

  5. Love it.

About as realistic as the traditional Nigerian scam though.

  6. I'm a fool! It sounds just like the other ones that I receive.. and I know that Nigerians love to come to America to do Doc Review. I guess it was as stretch.
